Coronado bans vaping in public. Vaping in Coronado now faces one hundred dollars fine.

The city’s ban on using e-cigarettes in public places went into effect now.

The ban adds e-cigarettes to an existing smoking ban passed by the Coronado City Council in 2014.

Places You Can and Cannot Vape

This bans people from smoking and vaping in all outdoor public properties such as parks, beaches, streets, highways, alleys, rights of ways, parkways, sidewalks, parking lots, and pathways, within twenty-five feet of closed areas which ban smoking, at outdoor public places, outdoor service areas, outdoor recreational areas and within outdoor dining areas if most of the dining area is on public property.

According to the ordinance, anyone who violates the ban will be fined one hundred dollars.

At home and private residential properties, smoking and vaping is allowed. The same is true for smoking and vaping in outdoor dining areas where most of the dining area consists of private properties according to the regulations.

Coronado expects to spend $10,000 to $20,000 to update its existing parks, beaches and business district signage to include vaping and vaping devices.

The council heard public testimony about vaping devices at a June 5 council meeting. Two representatives from health organizations supported expanding the ban, including the American Lung Association of California.

Why Coronado bans vaping in public?

Over the last five years, e-cigarettes and vaping have become more and more popular for inhaling nicotine and other substances, according to a staff report. Originally e-cigarettes are marketed as smoking cessation devices and they are becoming increasingly popular amongst young people who have never smoked before.

When did the ordinance take effect?

The ordinance was unanimously passed by the legislative council on July 17 and took effect on August 16. The new signs are expected to be installed in a few months.
