This week I took delivery of the hotly anticipated Joyetech Espion Silk kit. Having used this now for a few days as my primary vaping device, I have put together this review for you!
Joyetech Espion Silk Kit Features
The Joyetech Espion Silk mod is a fixed battery, standard 510 threaded devices with a maximum output of 80w. This little mod can go up in 0.1w increments up to 10w and then 1w increments after that.
Firing as low as 0.05ohm is allowed on this device and will go all the way up to 3.5ohm (not that anybody vapes this high anymore!) It features power mode, bypass mode, TC in SS Ni and Ti, with 3 memory modes for TC too.
The “notch core” atomiser also comes with the kit and features a pretty ingenious coil design (more to come later!)
Joyetech Espion Silk Mod Design
One of the selling points of this mod is the “silk” feel, hence the name. This feel is achieved by the whole device being wrapped in a smooth rubberised material that is superb for grip and adds a feel of quality and resilience to the mod. Dropping this thing will not even put a mark on the body! It is also marketed as having hypoallergenic properties and ideal for those with sensitive skin.
The device itself is tiny and fits very nicely in the palm of your hand. The dimensions are 25.9mm x 40mm x 120mm giving you a small but powerful mod!
Display & Buttons
The display on this mod is one area where features are to be desired. It is a very basic black and white display with a pretty low resolution.
The wattage and modes are selected by the fire button and wattage up and down buttons. they have a nice tactile feel and are well built, but do not offer anything special over other mods.
With a build in 2800mah battery, you get loads of battery life, and this is charged via micro USB and supports 2a fast charging! This allows you to charge the battery quicker.
Where this device really shines to me is the weight! This mod is only 102g! To put that into context, 2 x 18650 batteries weigh 91g and 2 x 20700 batteries weigh 114g! This whole device is not too far off the weight of 2 x 18650 batteries on their own, and weighs less than 2 x 20700!
The “notchcore” tank that comes with the kit is a very interesting tank. This is not an RTA, but also doesn’t feel like a sub ohm tank. The tank itself is 49.5mm x 22mm and has a capacity of 2.5ml.
Deck & Coils
The deck features a section where you press fit the horizontal “notchcoil” into the deck and the gold-plated connectors hold the coil in place. In the box, you get 5 x replacement notch coils (one in the tank), and they are fairly simple to replace the cotton on! A big win for a replaceable coil if you ask me.
It also features a sliding top fill cap and adjustable airflow. It allows for DTL vaping with a restrictive feel but works better as an airy MTL feel in my opinion. it is not a true MTL tank, but it can be achieved by changing the airflow.
The Joyetech Espion Silk kit is a lovely little mod that is designed at people who want something robust, reliable, light and with a long battery life. I have enjoyed using the kit for the last few days. But it does not rival the larger more powerful mods.
With a max output of 80W, you will not get the battery life of a dual 18650 or 20700 mod. But for those people vaping at between 25-35w, this device is perfect. The quality of the vape from the included tank is good for these lower wattages, but cloud chasers will be left disappointed by the lack of “oohmph”
The feel of the mod is fantastic and it is very well built. This is where the device really shines. You can tell this is a key focus of the device. It gives you the confidence that this will take some abuse and continue working for many years to come!
Where to buy?
I have been vaping for over 5 years and have been a keen hobbyist ever since starting. I moved into the review side of things after the success of my @mikethevaper Twitter page and have been striving to provide help and knowledge ever since.
